You may also hear people refer to transponder keys as chip keys. They function by a radio signal from the key to the dashboard. They were invented as a way to prevent auto theft. This type of key is extremely difficult to duplicate, which is why so many manufacturers are making keys with them. Some refer to the skeleton key as a master key and others may refer to it as a bitted key used for unlocking lever tumbler locks. Just removing the middle portion can create a skeleton key. This will enable the key to lock and unlock several different locks.
